The queen of the pagan gods gave the hundred eyes of the vanquished Argus to the foul to adorn its tail, and adopted the bird as her attribute. Later, Mary the Christian queen of heaven inherited the symbol of the peacock and its “eyes” became the all seeing eyes of providence.”
