Lois Bourne, author of the incredibly warm and informative “Witch Amongst Us” gave a very simple answer to the question “how can you tell if someone is really a Witch”?
According to Lois, one must determine whether or not he/she can really do magic. Since Witches live by magic and for magic (or Magick, as some traditions write), the ability to effectively cast spells is, I’m sorry to say, a fundamental requirement. Do Witches cast spells for others? For cash? Should they? These are all hotly debated ethical questions in the Witchcraft community.

Many years ago I came across this Witches Manifesto while reading “Drawing Down The Moon” for the first time. It was such an exciting thing to read that everafter, I have never missed an opportunity to pass this on when I can.
Far from being the definitive Witches Manifesto (it speaks to radical feminists as if they were practising Witches) this passage seems the “grooviest” and most inspirational mantra of all the 20th Century Women’s Liberation Movement literature. I love that it was written in 1968, the year of my birth.

Remind me to tell you about the time I committed myself to doing makeup on my mother’s corpse.
I arrived at the funeral home, Edward Gorey lunchbox in hand, filled with all of my mother’s favorite accessories, bossing around the mortuary-team-who-knew-better as if I owned the place, expecting to do my mother’s makeup in the most “noble”, capable, dutiful-daughterly way. But corpses are strange. Especially a corpse that just happened to have been the person you loved most in the world…

I wasn’t connecting with the women I was meeting in Los Angeles and “Devil’s Eggs” seemed like the most hilarious thing I could do to amuse myself, short of starting my own band.
Quite simply, it’s the book I began to write about women who perform live, dressed as birds. And that’s all I’m going to reveal until I’ve gotten my poor man’s copyright back in the post.
